Miles and miles

An article recently published in the Detroit Free Press tells the story of one man who walks 21 miles to work every day. I saw on Facebook that at least $27,000 was raised by readers to buy the man a car.

The number of miles may be, but the situation is unfortunately, not unusual. I have spoken with men and women who walk many miles to their low paying jobs every day because they don’t have, or know about, any other option.

Transit services are expensive and cost the taxpayers a lot of money and in this political climate there doesn’t seem to be much support for increasing any type of tax to pay for transit. But what about ridesharing? All those people in Detroit who donated money to help that one man pay for a car could agree to help many more by supporting transit. Or they could join a statewide ridesharing network, like we have in New York (511nyrideshare.org), and provide a ride to someone in need. The network will only work when there’s a critical mass of people registered who are willing to carpool.
