A transformative town

“it’s one of the greatest transformative towns in America.” says walkability expert Dan Burden in this Buffalo News article. He’s talking about my hometown, Hamburg, New York.

I haven’t been there in quite awhile so I guess it’s time for a visit. Burden was called in as a consultant in the early 2000s and has been impressed with the changes so far. The article mentions that the turnaround started with 4 roundabouts which calmed the traffic and were more pedestrian friendly.

They received federal funding through grants but the mayor of another town in the Buffalo area said, “It’s not about what the government wants. It’s about groups of residents, groups of merchants – people wanting to push for that.”

That’s a key point. We need to get people more involved.

We are always looking for people to get involved in the Cortland Downtown Partnership’s Design Committee. We meet the third Thursday of every month at 3 pm in the Beard Bldg., 9 Main Street in downtown Cortland.

Come join us.
