It could happen here

My husband and I just got back from a trip to Ireland. Ireland is a compact country with an excellent transportation network. Trains and buses between cities; public buses, taxis, bicycling and walking within cities and towns.

So many people live in towns and cities. This is encouraged by the government. And when you have to pay around $9 per gallon for gas, it makes sense.

They have bike lanes and pedestrian lanes and promote “sharing the space.”

And roundabouts! They may scare us but it is the most efficient way of moving vehicles quickly along the highways.

The cities and towns are full of people walking in their downtown areas. Much more vibrant places compared to here. Plenty of benches where you can sit and rest. Streets closed to traffic that became pedestrian malls and they were packed with people.

We could learn a lot from the Irish.
