Town hall meetings on the bus

Well I think this is a great idea!

El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke thought that he might not be reaching all of his constituents, especially those who are the least likely to come to town hall meetings. So he went to them.

As reported on Streetsblog, he started riding the buses around El Paso and talked with the riders, many of whom ride the bus because they don’t have money for a car.

“How many Congress members ever set foot on a bus, let alone go out of their way to get in touch with riders?” says the author of the article.

I would say the same thing around here. How many of our city aldermen, county legislators, or state representatives have even been on one of our local transit buses? Do they have any idea how many people depend on transit? How many have been in a local taxi?

I think it’s time.
