Everyone has heard of the dangers of texting while driving. But did you know that it’s dangerous to walk and text at the same time.
USA Today reported on a study done by researchers at The Ohio State University has shown a dramatic increase in the number of emergency room visits by people who have stepped in front of traffic or fallen off roadways or bridges due to cell phone use.
Most of these people are young. College students are extremely vulnerable.
We, who live in a college town, are well aware of this phenomena. I have seen young people walk out in front of traffic, fall off curbs, run into other pedestrians or poles. It happens every day.
So the message is to wait. And if you can’t wait, then take the following advice.
“If that email, text or call absolutely can’t wait, take a minute, step to the side of the sidewalk, send what you need to send, and then put your phone away, says James Gallagher, communications manager for the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, at the UNC Highway Safety and Research Center.”
