All the statistics show that in the last few years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of bicyclists on the road. Some cities are making it easier to bike than others. Some have added bikes that can be rented out. Others have added bike lanes.
But the ones that will truly succeed, in my opinion, are the ones that have added and are continuing to add, protected bike lanes. These lanes are separated from traffic, usually built between the sidewalk and parked cars.
Safety is the key ingredient. If people don’t feel safe, they won’t bike, no matter how much you market it.
An article from The Nation’s Health shows what has happened in Washington, DC and what is happening in 6 cities across the country working with the Green Lane Project to develop more protected bike lanes.
When protected bike lanes become commonplace, that’s when you will really see a dramatic increase.
