More than a nudge

Getting us to change our ways usually takes more than a nudge. Individually and collectively we all have good intentions but sometimes a disincentive is what is necessary.

This comes to mind as I read this blog post More Mobile Cities.

Cities such as Copenhagen, Portland, and Hong Kong have really been in the forefront of “alternative” modes of transit whether it be bicycling, walking, or use of streetcars. Hong Kong has developed public/private partnerships. Their public transit system actually makes money, one of only two in the world. Their subway stations are also shopping malls.

Creative ideas abound but you still need a nudge as you can see in the last paragraph of the blog post.

“Hong Kong also uses sticks to push people to use their walking and transit systems: there’s a 100 percent tax on new cars.”
