“Route 66 of the future”

When it comes to transportation it seems that most of the innovation is taking place in Europe.

Something new will be happening in the Netherlands this year thanks to a designer who told Wired.co.uk. “I started imagining this Route 66 of the future where technology jumps out of the computer screen and becomes part of us.”

So what new technology might you see if you drive around the Netherlands later this year?

Some of the roads will glow in the dark and be able to tell you if the roads might be slippery. Road markings will be replaced with a special photo-illuminising powder which charges up in sunlight and can last up to 10 hours. Special paint will be used to paint markers such as snowflakes which will light up when the temperature dips below a certain point – meaning the roads could be icy.

All of this comes as the United Kingdom has decided to turn off or dim lights on motorways and residential streets after 9 pm to save money.

I would certainly love to see this technology come to America. You know what was so encouraging? I saw this topic featured prominently on the bottom of the front page of The Post-Standard (Syracuse) this morning. It’s great to see that the mainstream press is picking up on these topics.
