Impact of baby boomers

Well, we all know that the baby boomer generation has an impact – on just about everything.

Driving is no exception.

It was the baby boomer generation that fueled single occupancy driving. The fact that 8,000 of them are retiring every day will also have an impact on transportation.

What will be the impact? No one knows for sure but this Associated Press article gives some clues. There might be less congestion, increased use of public transportation, businesses that cater to the homebound, and/or use of automated cars that drive themselves.

Or it might be something else entirely. Transportation planners planning the interstate highway system did not foresee the huge numbers of women coming into the workforce in the 1980s and driving alone in their vehicles.

Let’s hope transportation planners this time will be able to plan better for the future.
