Someone’s not paying

Actually quite a lot of someones.

From 2007 – 2011 more than 1 million people did not pay their Thruway tolls, mostly by zipping through the EZ Pass lane.

According to an article in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, the Thruway Authority in New York State wants a 45% toll increase on trucks but is remiss in collecting the $35 million that people have dodged in charges and fines.

Where do folks like to zip through the lanes without paying? The Tappan Zee Bridge comes out on top. More than 80,000 vehicles from 2007 – 2011 went across the bridge without paying the $5 toll, costing the Authority $7 million.

The Authority has collected some of this money through a credit agency but only about $7 million out of the $35 million.

Time to come up with a better system?
