To wear or not to wear

That is the question.

And we’re talking about bicycle helmets.

In this country it’s almost a sacrilege for an adult not to wear a helmet while bicycling. But in other countries they look at helmets in an entirely different way as reported in an article in the New York Times.

The advocates for helmetless riding say helmets deter people from bicycling because it makes the activity appear more dangerous than it really is.

“Pushing helmets really kills cycling and bike-sharing in particular because it promotes a sense of danger that just isn’t justified — in fact, cycling has many health benefits,” says Piet de Jong, a professor in the department of applied finance and actuarial studies at Macquarie University in Sydney. He studied the issue with mathematical modeling, and concludes that the benefits may outweigh the risks by 20 to 1.”

Of course , not everyone shares this view.

Read the story and let me know what you think.
