Pedestrian fatalities

Just a few days ago there was a tragic pedestrian fatality in Cortland County.

How common are these accidents?

According to a graphic compiled by the American Planning Research Department the number of fatal pedestrian accidents has been going down but it is still more than 4,000 people per year. And thousands more are injured.

Some interesting facts:

A. 13% of drivers had more than .08% alcohol in their system; 35% of pedestrians had more than .08% alcohol in their systems

B. 31% of accidents took place 8 pm – Midnight; 25% took place 4 pm – 8 pm.

C. A traffic signal may be expensive at $250,000 but the cost involved in a fatality is $4,300,000.
