Promoting cycling as transportation

An alumna of SUNY Cortland has recently won a national award for her efforts to promote cycling as an alternative form of transportation.

Hobit Lafaye received her master’s degree last spring and her project was entitled “Creating Cultural Change through the Theory of Planned Behavior and Interpretation: A Project to Promote Cycling for Transportation.”

She is planning to pursue her doctorate at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and hopes to implement her project there.

She knows it won’t be easy. As reported on the SUNY Cortland website, Lafaye said, “There has been a focus on infrastructure, which is necessary but insufficient to increase cycling for transportation. We also need to address cultural attitudes and barriers.”
