Welcome back students

The students are back so you will see more pedestrians and bicyclists on the streets of Cortland and traffic will be much heavier.

Let’s make sure this is a safe year for everyone in our community.

Here’s some advice from a 20+ year resident of the college hill – me!

1. Plan on a few extra minutes to get anywhere around the city. If you plan on this ahead of time, you won’t be so impatient and less apt to cause an accident.

2. Be very careful backing out of driveways and parking spaces. Sometimes it is difficult for a driver to see what’s behind them and many people (not only students) are walking with earbuds and might not hear your car. Which leads me to #3.

3, When you’re walking and talking on your cell phone or texting or listening to music, pay attention to your surroundings and not just at intersections.

4. Just because you have a walk signal does not guarantee your safety. One in five pedestrian fatalities happen at signaled crosswalks. Again, pay attention to your surroundings.

5. Always wear a helmet when bicycling.

6. If you’re bicycling don’t listen to music. You need to hear if a car door is opening in front of you or someone is driving up too close behind you.

7. Please, please don’t text when driving.
