Staying safe while biking in traffic

Julie Deardorff from the Chicago Tribune has some tips for Staying safe while biking in traffic.

Here are some of her tips:

1. Don’t ride with headphones. You might need to hear the click of a car door.

2. Wear a good helmet and replace it every 3 – 5 years or if you crash. It’s only good for one hit.

3. Don’t weave in and out of cars. You may need to “take the lane” if the right side of the road is full of potholes or the street isn’t wide enough.

4. Be seen at all times and assume drivers are blind, drunk and/or are multitasking.

5.Ride outside the door zone, keeping a distance of 3 – 5 feet between your handlebars and the parked cars.
