We’re getting older :)

The U.S. Census released demographic numbers yesterday from the 2010 census that shows that New York state is getting older too. The median age in New York is 38 compared to 35.9 in the 2000 census.

What was most interesting is that the rural areas show the largest increase. The dozen counties with the highest median ages were for the most part rural.

Some have attributed this trend to the fact that  younger people are leaving because there are no jobs and some retirees have moved in and bought second homes.

This will have a great impact, especially in regards to transportation. We are currently trying to find ways to expand bus service to more areas of Cortland County but it is an enormous challenge. Any thoughts?

Here are some local numbers:
Cortland County
Age                              Percentage
60-64                          5.7
65-69                          4.0
70-74                         3.0
75-79                          2.3
80-84                          1.8
85 +                             1.9
