When is it time?

When is it time to give up the car keys?

Since our society is so car dependent one of the most frightening aspects of getting older is the realization that at some point you may not be able to drive.

If you live in an area where you absolutely need a car to get around, this loss of independence can be traumatic. Just another reason why we should make sure our communities have a strong public transportation system, including making sure we have a more walking friendly community.

Did you know that the average time a person will outlive their driving ability is 10 years?

AARP has some good resources, whether you are the one who needs to determine if you should continue to drive, or for caretakers who may need to assess the driving ability of their loved ones.

How To Assess Your Loved One’s Situation, the Assessment Checklist, and a video by Elinor Ginzler, director of Livable Communities at AARP are good places to start .
